Canadian Running Brands to Know and Support
Canada has always been a running country.
We run through winter, humidity, mountains, coastal rain, prairie wind, city streets, and seemingly endless kilometres of trail. Some of the most interesting running products in the world are also being created here, from technical trail shoes and women-specific footwear to performance apparel, endurance nutrition, and technology.
This feels like a pivotal moment to discover and support them.
Choosing a Canadian company will not solve every economic challenge, and we will all continue to use excellent products from around the world. This is not about rejecting American or international brands. It is about recognizing that every purchase is also a vote of confidence. When Canadian runners support Canadian businesses, we help those companies keep innovating, employing people, investing in our communities, and representing Canada around the world.
Here are some Canadian running brands worth knowing.
RunGo: Running navigation, routes, and experiences
RunGo is a Canadian-built running app available on iPhone, Android, and Apple Watch.
RunGo helps runners find, create, and follow routes with turn-by-turn voice navigation. Its features include offline maps, interactive Apple Watch maps, customizable running metrics, route flyovers, live tracking, and audio-guided stories and experiences.
A runner with a cellular Apple Watch can even follow a route, record a run, and share their live location without carrying a phone.
RunGo is also used by races, run clubs, coaches, hotels, retailers, and other Creators to share routes and bring them to life through navigation, custom audio, and branded experiences.
Built in Vancouver, RunGo can help you explore your own neighbourhood or confidently run somewhere entirely new.
Hettas: Performance running shoes designed for women
Hettas is a Vancouver-based footwear company creating performance running shoes specifically around women’s biomechanics.
Instead of adapting a shoe originally developed for men, Hettas built its women-specific last from the ground up. Its design considers differences in areas such as heel shape, instep volume, alignment, and toe space.
The current collection includes models for everyday mileage, faster training, and race day. It is an ambitious Canadian entrant in one of running’s most technically demanding product categories, and a brand worth watching closely.
Ciele Athletics: Canadian running style with global influence
Founded and based in Montreal, Ciele Athletics began with a simple but remarkably influential idea: make a better running cap.
Ciele’s lightweight five-panel caps became recognizable at races and run clubs around the world. The company has since expanded into technical shirts, shorts, jackets, race-day apparel, and other equipment designed for performance and protection.
Ciele combines serious running function with a distinctive design language and a strong sense of community. Few Canadian running brands have had a greater influence on how modern running looks.
norda: Trail shoes born from Canadian conditions
norda creates premium trail-running shoes inspired by the terrain between Montreal and Quebec’s Eastern Townships.
The company began when its founders could not find a trail shoe that was simultaneously tough, light, and fast enough for the conditions they wanted to run through. Its shoes use advanced materials and are built for technical terrain, long distances, and demanding weather.
Canada did not historically have many homegrown performance-running shoe companies. norda is helping change that, while building a following far beyond Canada.
PRAISE Endurance: Running apparel and culture from Montreal
PRAISE Endurance is a Montreal-founded running apparel brand with a mission to inspire people to run.
Its collections include technical shirts, singlets, shorts, tights, sports bras, hats, socks, and seasonal layers. The brand draws heavily from the communities, routes, and rituals surrounding running, treating the sport as both athletic performance and culture.
PRAISE is particularly interesting for runners looking for something more independent and expressive than traditional mass-market athletic apparel.
Balmoral: Canadian performance apparel with a timeless aesthetic
Balmoral was founded in Canada to create running apparel influenced by the country’s climate and way of life.
Its products combine technical function with a clean, understated aesthetic. The collection includes running shorts, tops, socks, and other pieces intended to work equally well for daily mileage, community runs, and life around the sport.
Like Ciele and PRAISE, Balmoral is part of a particularly strong group of Montreal running brands attracting attention well beyond Canada.
Outway: Performance socks from Victoria
Founded in Victoria, British Columbia, Outway makes performance socks for running, cycling, training, and everyday movement.
Its socks use technical yarns, compression around the arch and cuff, and seamless toe construction to help manage moisture, reduce movement inside the shoe, and remain comfortable over long distances.
Socks may not be the most glamorous part of a runner’s kit, but they can determine whether a long run ends comfortably or with a collection of blisters. Outway is a proudly Canadian option for an essential piece of running gear.
Näak: Endurance fuel born in Canada
Näak was founded in Canada by athletes looking for more effective and sustainable ways to fuel endurance activity.
The company makes drink mixes, waffles, bars, gels, purées, and recovery products, with a particular emphasis on long-distance and ultra-endurance performance. Näak products are now used by runners and races internationally, but the company’s story began with two Canadian friends making their own energy bars.
For trail runners, ultrarunners, and anyone whose long run requires more than a sip of water, Näak is one of Canada’s most prominent endurance-nutrition brands.
XACT Nutrition: Canadian-made ideas for better-tasting fuel
Founded in Quebec and based in Montreal, XACT Nutrition produces energy fruit bars, protein products, hydration mixes, and other endurance nutrition.
XACT began with a straightforward goal: make sports nutrition taste better. Its products have become familiar sights at Canadian races, including major events in Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City.
For runners looking to move some of their nutrition purchases to a Canadian company, XACT is an easy brand to explore.
GRYPH: Canadian running shoes and apparel
GRYPH designs running shoes and apparel for runners, walkers, and anyone who enjoys moving.
The brand grew from YUL-RUN and its parent company, MATH Sport Canada, which was founded in 2014. That experience helped GRYPH develop products tested by runners in real conditions and designed for the realities of the Canadian market.
Its collection includes road and trail-running shoes, along with technical clothing and accessories. GRYPH emphasizes comfort, durability, responsible production, and products made to last.
Alongside Hettas and norda, GRYPH is helping build a distinctly Canadian presence in performance-running footwear.
MarsQuest: Performance eyewear born in Toronto
MarsQuest is a Canadian eyewear brand founded in Toronto in 2016.
Its lightweight, colourful sunglasses are designed for running, cycling, skiing, and other outdoor activities, with an emphasis on performance, durability, and accessible pricing.
MarsQuest has also become closely connected to Canada’s running community as an eyewear partner for races across the country, from Vancouver and Calgary to Toronto and Montreal.
For runners looking to protect their eyes without spending several hundred dollars, MarsQuest offers a practical Canadian alternative with plenty of personality.
Arc’teryx: Mountain running innovation from the North Shore
Founded in North Vancouver, Arc’teryx creates technical apparel, footwear, hydration vests, and equipment for running through demanding mountain conditions.
Its Norvan collection is specifically designed for trail running, with products ranging from lightweight shoes, shorts, and breathable layers to waterproof shells and packs for longer mountain adventures.
Arc’teryx remains headquartered in North Vancouver, close to the trails that influence its designs. The company also operates ARC’One, its manufacturing and development facility in New Westminster, where products and production methods are tested before being introduced across its global supply chain.
Arc’teryx is now part of the international Amer Sports group, so it is not Canadian-owned in the same sense as many of the independent companies on this list. But its headquarters, design expertise, product development, employment, and mountain-running identity remain deeply rooted in British Columbia.
lululemon: From Vancouver to runners around the world
lululemon opened its first store in Vancouver in 1998 and has grown into one of Canada’s most recognizable global athletic brands.
Although it first became famous for yoga apparel, lululemon now has substantial collections designed specifically for running. These include technical shirts, shorts, tights, jackets, sports bras, accessories, and an expanding range of running shoes.
Its running products are designed for everything from everyday training to long runs and race day, with considerable attention given to fit, storage, comfort, and movement. The company also supports running communities and ambassadors in Canada and internationally.
Today, lululemon is a large publicly traded international company rather than a small independent Canadian business. But it remains headquartered in Vancouver, where its story began, and demonstrates how a company created in Canada can grow into a globally influential athletic brand.
Canadian running is bigger than any one list
These companies represent different parts of the running experience: shoes, apparel, socks, nutrition, technology, routes, races, and community.
They also represent different versions of what it means to be a Canadian brand. Some are Canadian-owned. Some were founded and remain headquartered here. Some design or develop their products in Canada while manufacturing internationally. Others keep more of their production at home.
Those distinctions matter, and we encourage runners to learn about where brands are owned, where their teams work, and where their products are designed and manufactured. Supporting a Canadian company and buying a product made in Canada are related, but they are not always the same thing.
What these brands share is that Canadian ideas, people, landscapes, and running communities have helped shape what they are building.
At this pivotal time, Canadian runners have an opportunity to be more intentional. We can continue choosing the products that work best for us while making an extra effort to discover what is being created here. Trying one Canadian product, recommending a local company, visiting an independent running store, or sharing a Canadian brand with a friend can make a meaningful difference.
What Canadian running brands did we miss?
This is not meant to be a complete list. In fact, we hope it keeps growing.
